An open letter to the makers of all American TV shows

Dear Makers of All American TV Shows,

The traditional word for a group of episodes of the same programme is "series".

"Seasons" are what happen to the weather.

Sincerely,
Kit Marsden (some bloke)

Dear British TV Viewer,
We do call our programs "series" when referring to all of the episodes as a whole. We use "seasons" to establish subgroups of the series, and, though I didn't google it, we probably chose the word season since we refer to it as such... meaning we know that certain programs begin in the fall or which programs are summer programs. :)
